NCDB HIGHLIGHTS

Technical Assistance

Kansas

The KS DB Project, along with NCDB and the Kansas State School for the Blind, sponsored a Deaf-Blind Family weekend April 9th and 10th.  Susan Bashinski presented to approximately 120 participants on "Early and Emergent Communication". On Saturday, families met with Marlyn Minkin to discuss ways of managing family stress. Daycare was provided and there were multiple hands-on activities for children and siblings. The Project will be expanding opportunities for families to continue sharing and communicating via social networking sites.

Area 1 States

The western states collaborated in an effort to organize and share materials used by each of their projects in identification and child find activities. The result is a collection of resources nicely organized on a NING site on the Internet. The materials fall into the following categories:

  • Deaf-Blind Awareness & Outreach
  • What is Deaf-Blindness
  • Importance of Early Identification
  • Early Identification Bibliographies & References
  • Early Identification Powerpoint Presentations
  • Vision & Hearing Screening
  • Eligibility & Child Count Tools

The types of materials include brochures, posters, flyers, articles, PowerPoint presentations, checklists, bibliographies, videos and other formats. The members of the NING can view, download, modify and comment on any of the documents housed on the site. It is the hope of the Area 1 states that this resource will be widely used and will continue to grow with the addition of new materials. If you’re interested in joining this NING and accessing the resources, please contact Paddi Davies (daviesp@wou.edu) or Tom Udell (udellt@wou.edu).

Literacy

Deaf-Blind Model Classroom Project

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, North Carolina Deafblind Project, and the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies is working with selected school sites and students to identify and implement exemplary practices in literacy and communication for students who have been identified with deaf-blindness. Model sites are located in 4 different counties in the state. The students in the project have made remarkable changes. Read about the project, the stories and accomplishments of the students and check out the classroom resources.

National Child Count

With the May 1, 2010 submittal date approaching, states are busy updating their child count information. NCDB has received a number of inquiries regarding correct coding options for specific situations and more general questions as well. If you have questions about the child count, please do not hesitate to contact Mark Schalock at (503) 838-8777 or schalom@wou.edu or Robbin Bull at (503) 838-8562 or bullr@wou.edu.
