Family Engagement

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Here are some Family Engagement opportunities we wanted to share with you all…

1) FREE On-Line Training for Families -

The Open Hands Open Access (OHOA) Deaf-Blind Intervener Learning Modules are a free online national resource designed to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills related to intervention for students who are deaf-blind and being served in educational and community settings. The Mississippi Hearing and Vision Project is hosting an Open Hands Open Access Modules Cohort just for families. Families can sign up for whatever modules they prefer and it is free of charge! The schedule for the modules is:
• Dec. 1 - Jan. 20: Module 23: Behavior & Environmental Supports
• Feb. 1 - March 15: Module 5: Availability for Learning
• April 15 - May 30: Module 9: Routines for Participation & Learning
For more information, please download the following flyer:

2) Did you catch the webinar entitled “Educational Considerations for Students with Usher Syndrome”? -

The Usher Syndrome Coalition estimates that there are more than 7,000 children with Usher syndrome in the United States. Yet in 2015, the state deaf-blind projects reported that roughly 300 children with Usher syndrome were served. Where are these students being educated? And are their educational needs being adequately met?
In this 90-minute presentation Family Engagement Coordinators Carly Fredericks and Patti McGowan, both parents of children with Usher syndrome, along with Nancy O’Donnell, Director of the USH Trust Registry, shared strategies and resources to help families of children with Usher Syndrome. Here’s a link to the recording:
