Meet Soliz and Camila!

Family Engagement

NCDB is thrilled to announce that our second “Families Matter” story is ready and posted in the For Families section of our site: Come meet Soliz and Camila (2 adorable young children from Arizona) and their remarkable parents as they embark on a road trip from Arizona to California to camp out with their extended family. Their mother, Heather Joy, serves as the Family Specialist for the Arizona Deafblind Project. She and her husband, André, believe that the best way to teach their children is through real-life experiences. There is an immense amount of preparation and coordination involved in taking such a long trip. They are sure to blow your mind with their commitment to living a full life. We hope that after you watch the story, you will take a few minutes to post your thoughts in the comments section below. The family will be thrilled to hear how much you appreciate their kindness in sharing this personal adventure with the deaf-blind community. The staff at NCDB is grateful for their commitment not only to their own children, but to allowing the network to dream bigger as a result of their level of adventure. Please enjoy!

Summer vacation meant that I did not get around to finally viewing the finished product until the week before Summit. Congrats to all involved for a really beautiful product. The video's are gorgeous and the pacing and content demonstrate and share a lot of information. Many thanks to the Magdelano's and their beautiful family and for sharing their story in this series of thoughtful videos. I look forward to hearing how people are using them.

Those of us that were able to attend the NFADB Symposium and the NCDB Family Specialist Day had the opportunity to meet and work with Heather Magdelano. Wow, what a Parent Leader!

Dee and Julie, thanks for your feedback! I was involved in editing the videos, and it was so much fun to see all the different experiences Soliz and Camila had and how the family was able to make camping work so well. I'm so glad you're going to share them! Julie, it's also good to hear that you liked the additional resources. That's useful for us to know for future stories!

Megan, this new set of videos is incredible! What an amazing family and story. I can think of so many ways to share these videos and the information included with families and teachers and service providers here in CA. I really liked the inclusion of additional resources in each topic area as well. Can't wait to meet the next family. Also a BIG thanks to the Magdelano family for sharing their story and experiences!

Wow! Amazing family. I just have one son with special support needs and camping was so exhausting. However KS is so humid that makes it more challenging.
Love the many experiences they gave Soliz and Camila. I really thought is was so cool they used the shopping carts backwards, so the kids could see where they were going. Great idea. I can't wait to share these stories with some co-workers.
