Family Specialist Training and NFADB Symposium

Family Engagement

Hi everyone,

I'm writing on behalf of Megan Cote, NCDB's Family Engagement Initiative lead, and myself to update you on the recent Family Specialist Training and NFADB Symposium, held July 15-18 in Austin, Texas. Both events were amazing. Participants learned, shared, made new connections, and planned for the future. Together they worked to create a foundation that will make the theme of the Symposium a reality: "Mobilizing a Family Leadership Network: Improving Outcomes in Education and Services for Individuals who are Deaf-Blind."

A big thank from NCDB to NFADB and its wonderful President, Clara Berg, and board members for being so welcoming in allowing us to participate and to hold the family specialist training in conjunction with the Symposium. Having family specialists and family leaders from across the country in one location for 3 days was invaluable.

Thanks also to . . .

Jan Serak, CEO - Founder, WI FACETS and Co-Director Region 4 Parent TA Center, for volunteering her time in planning and presenting the family specialist training (and for giving a bonus presentation at the Symposium!). We are so grateful for her partnership.

The Texas Deafblind Outreach program and staff. A very special thank you to Edgenie Bellah for her tireless efforts to make everything run smoothly for our family specialist training at the same time that she was making local arrangements for the Symposium.

The state deaf-blind projects for enthusiastically supporting the attendance of family leaders and family specialists from their states.

We will be sharing more information moving forward about the family specialist training and you will hear a great deal about the Symposium from NFADB, but we just wanted to take a moment now to celebrate this successful event and express our appreciation to everyone involved.

Just so you know our Family Leader came back and presented to our DB Advisory Committee and went over her action plan. We are planning to meet with her in August to help her develop the rest of the action plan..she was happy to cross off one "to do", but so excited about her connections with her parents. Thanks from Nebraska!!!

Thanks, Donna! The family specialist training and the NFADB symposium were both great experiences. All credit for putting on the Symposium, though, including inviting Robbie and Mark and the rest of the presenters, goes to NFADB and its talented, hard-working, and totally lovable board members.

Very informative and a valuable time spent with families from around the country! My personal favorite presenter was Robbie Blaha from TX! She gave a powerful lecture on the relevance of HR 3535 and why it matters to our kids and families! Exquisite! Thank you Megan and Peggy for inviting Robbie and also inviting Mark from AFB to present on HR 3535. See some of you in DC next weekend!

I am so humbled that I had the opportunity to meet such amazing people throughout the nation supporting families within our community. As far as we have come with technology and as amazing as it is, we underestimate the power of face to face collaboration and I am so empowered to continue the connections I have made to better serve the families of New Jersey. What an amazing event! Thank you NCDB for supporting the Family Engagement Coordinators and providing this opportunity. Thank you to NFADB for your dedication! I am honored to be a part of your teams!!

This morning we had an Adobe Connect debrief meeting to hear from the participants from WA State. The ideas and resources that were shared will be really helpful! Thank you to all who organized this symposium. : )

And a big shout out to Peggy Malloy and Megan Cote for their tireless support (well maybe you're a bit tired now) of the NFADB Symposium. Your many hours in helping us plan this event and providing us with your advice and input is so appreciated!
