September 2017 News!

Family Engagement

Happy (almost) September Everyone!

There are so many amazing opportunities to connect and learn coming up in the weeks ahead related to Family Engagement that we want to share….

NCDB, in collaboration with NFADB and state deaf-blind projects, is offering a series of web-based, peer-to-peer meetings where parents who have lost a child will have an opportunity to process their grief and learn about coping strategies that have helped others. To find out more and enroll, go to: https://nationaldb.org/wiki/page/10/757. The next group will begin on Oct. 11 and run for five months. If you or someone you know has experienced the loss of a loved one with deaf-blindness, we’d love to have you join this caring community. Enrollment is free.

California Deafblind Services will be resuming monthly calls geared to Spanish-speaking families of children with deaf-blindness! Join them for these 90-minute teleconferences that help provide information and support on the third Tuesday of the month at 6pm PT / 9pm ET (except when indicated otherwise). Details can be found here: https://nationaldb.org/events/detail/news-and-announcements/10/1447

Please join us for a free webinar called “A Parent’s Story.” Myrna Medina, Family Engagement Specialist at California Deafblind Services and mother to a son, Norman, with deaf-blindness, will tell her family's story. This webinar will be offered in English on Wednesday, September 20 @ 12 PT and again in Spanish on Saturday, September 23 also @ 12 PT. For login information, please go to: https://nationaldb.org/events/detail/webinars/10/1376

On Thursday, October 11 @ 5 PT, NCDB will be hosting a 90-minute free webinar in collaboration with NFADB and the Usher Syndrome Coalition called “Educational Considerations for Students with Usher Syndrome.” Family Engagement Coordinators Carly Fredericks and Patti McGowan, both parents of children with Usher syndrome, along with Nancy O’Donnell, Director of the USH Trust Registry, will share personal stories and informative resources. Open discussion will follow. For more information, please go to: https://nationaldb.org/events/detail/webinars/10/1450

Interested in a free online course of study for parents/families on “The Role of Interveners in Educational Settings”? If so, details can be found here: https://nationaldb.org/events/detail/online-courses/10/1438. Don’t wait, because the next group runs September 18–October 23.

Those serving in the role of Family Engagement Coordinator for their state deaf-blind project work tirelessly to support families. To get a sense of all of the cool activities happening across the network, visit https://nationaldb.org/wiki/page/10/746. Stories are added on a regular basis, so please check back periodically!

We hope to see you at any or all of the upcoming events and that you are enjoying the last few moments of Summer!
