June 2017 EI&R Update!
Early Identification and Intervention
Happy June Everyone!
Here’s the monthly update from the Early Identification and Referral Initiative…
1) Please join us for a webinar on Wednesday, June 28 at 12 PT where Rose Moehring (South Dakota) and Sherri Nelson (North Dakota) will talk about how the OHOA Modules have had a positive impact in supporting the training of Part C providers. They will share results from local providers and there will be time for questions and answers at the end of the session. Log-in information can be found here: https://nationaldb.org/events/detail/8/1293
2) In response to the State Deaf-Blind Project Survey and DB Summit 2017, NCDB plans to partner with state projects to create 2 universal packets that can be used to support families of infants and toddlers with combined vision and hearing loss. The first will be a “Welcome Packet” for families of newly identified infants and toddlers. The second will be a “Transition Packet” to help parents plan for a successful transition from Part C to Part B. If you have information that could help build either of these packets that you are willing to share, we’d be very grateful! Please e-mail them to me (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Mark Schalock (email@example.com). And, if you’d be willing to review the potential content for either packet, please let us know that as well.
3) Also in response to the State Deaf-Blind Project Survey and DB Summit 2017, we are offering 2 discussion groups for Early Intervention. Twelve states have signed up and the monthly meetings will begin at the end of August. As these states make strides to improve the number of infants being identified and referred to their projects, and use materials in the Part C Framework to improve the knowledge and skills of early intervention providers and parents, we plan to share their insights with the broader deaf-blind community - so be on the lookout for updates on their progress and lessons learned in future forum posts. Who knows – maybe their work will spark an idea for you to try in your state!
In the meantime, please know that if you haven’t completed the Self-Assessment Guide in the last year or so, it’s always good to take a look and make sure that the time you spend attempting to increase your child find is spent on the right system (EHDI, Medical, Part C or Community Programs) and for the right need (under-identification or under-referral). Here’s a link to download the guide: https://nationaldb.org/pages/show/early-identification-and-referral/early-identification-and-referral-self-assessment-guide
Wishing you all a great start to your summer! We hope you have materials you are willing to share for the packets and that you plan to come cheer on Rose and Sherri at the end of the month!
