New Publication: Are Intervener Services Appropriate for Your Student With Deaf-Blindness? An IEP Team Discussion Guide

Interveners and Qualified Personnel

NCDB is happy to announce the completion of a new guide, "Are Intervener Services Appropriate for Your Student With Deaf-Blindness? An IEP Team Discussion Guide" (https://nationaldb.org/library/page/2598) The plan to develop the guide was included in the NCDB Intervener Services Recommendations (interveners.nationaldb.org), published in 2012, as a result of input from educational administrators, state deaf-blind project personnel, and families who reported a strong need for guidelines that would help teams make informed decisions about intervener services for an individual child or youth.

We want to thank our many network partners who helped develop the guide: Beth Kennedy (DB Central: Michigan’s Training & Resource Project), Leslie Buchanan (Utah Deaf-Blind Project), numerous individuals from the Texas Deafblind project (Robbie Blaha, Holly Cooper, Cyral Miller, Chris Montgomery, and Jenny Lace), Clara Berg (National Deafblind Intervener Initiative Parent Group, New York Deaf-Blind Collaborative, National Family Association for Deaf-Blind), Jerry Petroff (New Jersey Consortium on Deafblindness), Linda Alsop (Utah State University), Cindi Robinson (Arizona Deafblind Project), Martha Veto (Georgia Sensory Assistance Project).

Many of these participants also shared resources they use in their states for this purpose. In particular, we drew heavily from a document from the Texas Deafblind Project, "Determining the Need for an Intervener in Educational Settings."

We also want to thank everyone who helped us pilot test the guide.

We hope you find this helpful. At the end of a guide is a link to a survey where you can provide feedback. We plan to continue to collect data on its use for a while and make improvements as needed.

I agree Patti and I hope you guys can use it in Module 3 as a resource and get more parent feedback. We plan to include it in the Master copy of Module 3 as an important resource. Even if people aren't ready to use it, understanding it and knowing that it is there for future use is important.
