This update is regarding the work of the National Task force on Services for Young Adults with Additional Disabilities. For background information on the task force, click here.

During the late fall and early winter, work to identify effective services and practices for young adults who are deaf-blind and have additional disabilities continued via ongoing interviews with representatives of exemplary programs and agencies. In addition, two presentations were given to the task force to assist members in learning more about: a) effective state-level practices and b) federal mandates for improving outcomes for young adults with disabilities.

Nicole Turman, Arc of Pennsylvania

In November, Nicole Turman, program manager for ADEPT at the Arc of Pennsylvania, described the types of services the organization provides to schools, families, and educational teams, including:

  • Resources
  • Curriculum modifications and adaptations
  • Sensory interventions

Their robust outreach efforts are designed to increase the expectation of integrated employment for students with the most significant needs. Through their activities, the Arc has impacted state developmental disabilities and vocational rehabilitation agencies by embedding customized employment language within training the agencies offer to providers and families.

Brenda Simmons and Christine Johnson, WINTAC

In January, Brenda Simmons and Christine Johnson from the Workforce Innovation Technical Assistance Center (WINTAC), a national center that provides technical assistance related to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), described WINTAC’s overall work scope and then spoke specifically about one of the requirements of WIOA, Pre-employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS). Pre-ETS provide an early start to job exploration and must be made available to all students with disabilities who need them. In addition to Task Force members, this presentation was attended by Helen Keller National Center Regional Representatives. It's available for viewing using the link below.
